IF YOU ARE GETTING READY FOR YOUR FLIGHT REVIEW PLEASE READ THIS!! GA-AQP stands for General Aviation Advanced Qualification Program.
AQP is used by the airlines to train their pilots and keep them current. AQP programs are modular and flexible, in that they change to include hot button topics and lessons learned from recent accidents. Have you ever wondered why the airline accident/fatality rate it so much lower that that of General Aviation? Are they better pilots? Maybe. Are they more experienced. Sometimes. Is their equipment better? Possibly. Do they train differently than GA pilots? Absolutely! Also, airline pilots don't go through training only once every 24 calendar months! We have to lower the GA accident/fatality rate. We are going to do that by being better pilots, gaining more experience, and training like those that fly the big iron. And we are going to have a lot of fun doing it! GA-AQP is a good first step. Marker Inbound is now offering the GA-AQP style of flight review In our Fishers AATD.
The FAA no longer uses the term BFR. It's now simply a Flight Review. It makes sense that a flight review should be taken whenever it may be needed, not just every 24 calendar months. Yes, Part 61 still requires a Flight Review at least every 24 calendar months to act as PIC.
The GA-AQP type of flight review looks at the things that are killing general aviation pilots and incorporates them into a set of lessons customized to YOUR type of flying. Using our state-of-the-art AATD, the pilot is immersed into real-world scenario based training that requires solid Aeronautical Decision Making skills (including Risk Management) and will include abnormals. The program is spread out over the 24 month Flight Review period and can be done as often as you want. We recommend every 6 months, but once a year is great too. If you insist on doing your full Flight Review every 24 calendar months you may want to consider adding an AATD session at the 1 year mark or every 6 months until your next Flight Review.
I have to point out that GA-AQP is not a flight review, but will count toward WINGS credit. It's completely voluntary... for now. You still have to do a flight review every 24 calendar months, or complete any remaining WINGS requirements. GA-AQP is NOT an FAA program. It's us, as flight instructors and pilots trying to change the way we train to reduce the fatality rate before the government steps in and does it for us!
The good news? (Yes, it gets better!) The AATD sessions ARE NOT PASS OR FAIL! It's ALL education and training. GA-AQP is your very own, customized AQP program! Two 1-hour "flights" a year in our AATD with an instructor will cost you leass than one hour of dual in a Cessna 172. And I assure you, you'll be a better pilot for it.
But wait there's more! If you are multi-engine rated you can save even more. We don't charge more for fancier aircraft. Want to fly a Barron 58 or Seminole? Your GA-AQP is the same price as the Cessna 172!
Last but not least, even if you never plan to move up a certificate or two, the AQP-BFR can be logged as training time toward your Commercial or ATP certificates. If you ever change your mind, the training counts. Any Instrument time we do can be counted toward your Instrument rating or ATP certificate within the FAA limits for AATD's.
Do we really want the government to move in and TELL us what must be done? We are better than that. We can reduce the GA accident/fatality rate without further regulation. But further regulation may be on the horizon if we don't improve. Then you will see how expensive mandated training can be.
